I had the good folks at the Gunsite Gunsmithy mount a Burris scout scope forward of the action about twenty years ago. The resulting rifle is a delight.

My M77 hawkeye in 308 is a good shooter. .5 MOA rifle and ditching the crap Hogue stock, added a BC Carbalite with a full bed job make things even better. From what I hear its hit or miss with Ruger chambers/barrels, see how it goes with some match ammo.

The factory aperture sights are accurate out to 300 yards for steel targets. The bolt and trigger started off a little rough, but after a couple hundred rounds and some thorough cleaning, it is quite smooth. My brother in law described the trigger as "scary" but rifle wise he doesn't have a lot to compare too.
